Prisoner Purges Cell Phone, Cigarettes And Rolling Papers

Must Read

Suspicions that a prisoner at the Melrose maximum security prison swallowed foreign objects turned out to be true. The 33-year-old prisoner from Goodlands is serving time for a theft case. During the day of Thursday, June 9, he was brought before the court of Pamplemousses for another case of theft. After his return to the prison, he underwent a body scan which detected foreign bodies in his stomach. This prisoner was then taken to the Jawaharlall Nehru Hospital in Rose-Belle where he was admitted. Early Friday morning, June 11, he purged a Nokia brand cell phone with its battery, two pieces of adhesive tape each containing five broken cigarettes and another adhesive tape containing twelve sheets of rolling paper. An investigation was initiated by the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (Adsu) of the Southern Division to this effect.

Following a request made by a prison officer from the Melrose prison shortly before 9:00 a.m. on Friday, June 11, a team of police officers led by Sergeant Gervais Sauteur went to room 0.1 of the Rose-Belle hospital. He told the police officers of Adsu that this prisoner, who is admitted there, was suspected of having swallowed foreign bodies on Thursday June 10. This was after he had appeared in the court of Pamplemousses for a case of theft. Indeed, on the morning of Saturday June 11 at 6:15 am, he returned a Nokia cell phone with its battery, ten broken cigarettes that were wrapped in adhesive tape and twelve sheets of rolling paper.

The exhibits were seized by a police officer of Adsu. As of Saturday, the prisoner was still admitted to this hospital under the supervision of a prison guard.
