Nobel Peace Prize 2022 Awarded To Ales Bialiatski And Two NGOs

Must Read

After medicine, physics, chemistry and literature, it was the turn of the Nobel Peace Prize to be awarded this Friday, October 7. The Norwegian committee awarded multiple laureates: the Belarusian opponent Ales Bialiatski, and two human rights NGOs, the Russian Memorial and the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties.

Ales Bialiatski, 60, is a Belarusian political activist currently in prison, known for his work as the head of Viasna, the main human rights organization in Belarus. He founded the organization Viasna (which means spring) in 1996 to document the regime’s methods against opponents, including the torture of political prisoners. Since 2020, he has been imprisoned without ever having been tried and the committee took the opportunity to reward him and demand his release from the regime of Alexander Lukashenko.

It is therefore an individual and two international organizations, while the names of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Belarusian opponent Svetlana Tikhanovskaya returned regularly in recent days as favorites.
