A first in Mauritius, the new palliative care unit of the said clinic has been designed for the very old or the ones in extreme suffering. Inspired by the existing models in France and elsewhere, it offers a peaceful and quiet living space with the assistance of a whole range of health professionals to provide well-being, relief and great comfort to each resident of this unit.
Escaping the weight
It will have only twelve rooms, but it will be laid out on an area that could have accommodated at least four times as many beds. The idea is to offer as much comfort as possible to people who are tired or in constant pain. The rooms are large and spacious, with large windows, view, wide corridors, white walls painted to bring out the serenity, wooden and also coloured decorations, plants, furniture… everything to take the resident away from the reality of a stay in a hospital or clinic for care. And speaking of care, apart from medicinal treatments, the Ferriere Clinic will offer a range of non-medicinal therapies for treatment purposes, including aromatherapy, art and music therapy, therapeutic baths, among others.
A minimum stay of 10 days
The panel that will closely monitor each patient will be made up of doctors, psychologists, therapists and caregivers trained in palliative care but already working for the clinic. The establishment has made provision for the families of the future residents where a lounge has been accommodated with an access to a terrace and a children’s corner is being finalised. The occupants, who have already booked, will soon arrive for a period of 10 days, because let’s be clear, this unit is not a dying place but a place to ease their suffering in a serene setting while getting all the care needed.
