Netflix To Turn Squid Game Into Reality TV Show With $4.56m Prize

Must Read

Inspired by its most popular dystopian series of all time – Squid Game, Netflix is planning a reality show on the same lines. Only this time there will be no life or death at stake. Netflix plans to have 456 recruits from around the world play for high stakes and “the worst fate is going home empty-handed”.

As announced by Netflix, the players are set to battle for a $4.56m prize. This new reality show is set to have 10 episodes. Squid Game: The Challenge – would offer the “largest cast and lump cash prize in reality TV history,” according to Netflix.

The OTT Platform said that, “As [players] compete through a series of games inspired by the original show – plus surprising new additions – their strategies, alliances, and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them.”

Netflix has laid out a set of requirements insisting that participants need to be at least 21 years old and must speak English. The cast is also required to be available for up to 4 weeks in 2023 for filming.

Created as a tribute to the original series, the reality show will have 456 participants vying for the top prize. Also, Netflix has announced that the super-hit dystopian series will be renewed for another season, a move which has heightened fans’ expectations.

What is Squid Game?

Squid Game is a South Korean thriller series that focuses on a game held for debt-ridden people who compete for a pile of cash in a deadly and fatal series of children’s games.

Director, writer and executive producer of Squid Game Hwang Dong-hyuk said in a statement on Monday: “It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever.”

Netflix has seen revenues fall due to competition from rival streaming websites and also after it exited Russia. In April, the OTT platform revealed a sharp drop in subscribers and warned that many more were set to quit Netflix.

This saw Netflix lose more than $50bn off the firm’s market value. Experts have pointed out that the OTT platform may face a crisis and will surely struggle to get back on track.

If you are a fan of Squid Game this might be your chance to participate in a real life “Squid Game” competition. Netflix hasn’t yet revealed details regarding the registration and participation process, but we can only imagine it is not going to be easy since the prize money is $4.56m!
