National Assembly: PM Proposes National Environmental Clean-Up Authority

Must Read

The National Environment Cleaning Authority Bill was presented to the National Assembly last Tuesday. Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth emphasized the importance of a clean environment and respect for nature.

‘A cleaner, greener and safer Mauritius’. This is what Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth wants for the country. Thus, the ‘National Environment Cleaning Authority Bill’ was presented. Before discussing it, the head of government pointed out that different companies are responsible for cleaning land, streets, beaches, rivers, drains, highways … This requires the deployment of several people and the organization of these works is handled by different departments, ministries, municipalities … But often, there are duplications or failures. In addition, these cleaning and beautification works have cost about Rs 5.6 billion for the last three years.

For these reasons, the National Environment Cleaning Authority Bill has been introduced.  This bill provides for the creation of a National Environment Cleaning Authority. This authority will be responsible, among other things, for developing a national strategy for the cleaning and beautification of Mauritius. A strategy that also includes the recycling of waste. Pravind Jugnauth said that a clean environment has an impact on the quality of life of the population, and reduces the risk of flooding due to blocked drains and vector-borne diseases. The head of government also said that composting units will become operational in 2024.

The parliamentary proceedings will resume next Tuesday.
