MI5 Says Chinese Agents Approached 20,000 People In UK

Must Read

According to the Director of MI5, Chinese operatives have now secretly approached over 20,000 people in the UK over the internet.

It coincides with a fresh alert to tens of thousands of British companies about the possibility of intellectual property being pilfered.

At the security leaders of the Five Eyes alliance’s historic public appearance in California, Ken McCallum was speaking to the BBC. Together, the leaders of the security services of the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand were together.

For the first time, they took this action to alert the world about China obtaining trade secrets.

Because Stanford University is located in the centre of Silicon Valley, it was selected as the location for the first public gathering.

Security chiefs have warned that innovative research is being pilfered in both public declarations and a private meeting with investors and business owners.

In an interview conducted during the event, McCallum told the BBC, “We have seen a sustained campaign on a pretty epic scale.”

MI5 used to be primarily concerned with defending government secrets from foreign spies, but these days they also fear that small businesses, startups, and researchers—who might not have been as concerned about security—are frequently the targets of thefts of innovative ideas.

“If you’re working today at the cutting edge of technology then geopolitics is interested in you, even if you’re not interested in geopolitics,” Mr McCallum said.

In an attempt to alert tens of thousands of potentially vulnerable UK firms, MI5 must go public in a manner that it has never done before.

McCallum stated that MI5 had now observed suspected Chinese operatives approaching more than 20,000 individuals in the UK via professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, with the aim of fostering their willingness to provide sensitive information—a figure that was double that of earlier reports.

Over 20 instances of Chinese companies considering or actively attempting to obtain sensitive technology developed by UK companies and universities through investments or other means, where China’s full role is concealed, frequently through complex company structures, have also been observed by MI5 in the past year.

At least two Chinese businesses have been involved in this, attempting to evade the legal scrutiny necessary to get private information belonging to UK corporations.

It’s thought that a second Chinese business obtained research data that was pilfered from a prestigious UK institution. Additionally, there may be attempts to go around and subvert the administrative and legal safeguards at two more prestigious universities in an effort to get access to and influence on cutting-edge research.

The purchase of a sensitive UK tech business that was connected to the supply chains of the UK military and other significant western commercial corporations was also interfered with by MI5 and its partners. China has continuously refuted claims of misconduct and espionage.
