Must Read

Jayen Chellum, the General Secretary of l’Association des Consommateurs de l’île Maurice, has announced his challenge in court the recent increase of two rupees in fuel prices. It was during a press conference in which were also present: Rajen Narsinghen, senior lecturer in law at the University of Mauritius, Bruno Laurette, from Linion Sitwayen and numerous social workers, including Georges Ah Yan.

Jayen Chellum said that there has been an increase in the price of all products and that further increases should be expected because of the recent decisions taken by government: devaluation of the rupee and levy of Rs 2 on fuel prices not to mention the increase in the price of edible oil.

He then announced that his organization is contemplating the possibility of challenging the latest two rupees increase in fuel prices. Rajen Narsinghen explained that l’ACIM contacted him together with two Senior Counsels and other legal experts to determine the best strategy to bring the matter before the court. He added that time is needed to determine the best option.

Bruneau Laurette, for his part, announced that a demonstration will be organized to denounce the recent increase in fuel prices. He added that his NGO will seek the authorization of the police. If it is not granted, he threatened to resort to go-slow actions in the whole capital.

Jayen Chellum also severely criticized the fuel price structure, saying that the actual price at the pump contains so many taxes and “contributions”.
