Judicial Inquiry: The Mystery Concerning Soopramanien Kistnen’s Backpack

Must Read

Three policemen have been heard this morning before the District Court of Moka and the mystery concerning Soopramanien Kistnen’s backpack remains. We still do not know where it lies and if it still exists.

ASP Vikash Seebaruth, the first to depone, said this morning that no backpack was seized. He made this statement before Magistrate Vidya Mungroo-Jugurnath, who is presiding over the judicial enquiry. ASP Seebaruth said he checked the entries in the diary books of the Moka police station and the Moka CID. He said ASP Jankeeparsad Buchoo is the right person to answer questions on the exhibits seized from the place where Soopramanien Kistnen’s body was found in Telfair, Moka on 18 October 2020.

Sergeant Mosafeer was the next person to give evidence. He confirmed that there was indeed a backpack at the site where Soopramanien Kistnen was found. He said that Sergeant Mungar had secured the contents of the bag. As for the bag itself, Sergeant Mosafeer said that it was so badly burnt that it ended up in ashes.  “It crumbled,” he added. Sergeant Mosafeer was confronted with an earlier statement in which he had said that the bag was “partially burnt“. He was then given a warning by the magistrate. The sergeant stressed that he did not check the contents of the bag.

Sergeant Mosafeer was again cautioned by the magistrate when he said that the examination of Soopramanien Kistnen’s body was done at Jeetoo Hospital. He was again confronted with an earlier version where he had said that it was at Victoria Hospital that it was done. “So you lied?” asked the magistrate. “No, I made a mistake,” the sergeant replied.

Sergeant Mangar, of the Scene of Crime Office, also gave evidence. He received three warnings for misleading the court.
