Chabeelall Sharma Dhuwal, 56, also known as John, breathed his last at the North Hospital early Sunday evening, April 2. The resident of Miss Laure, Terre-Rouge was injured on the evening of Sunday, January 15, when he was hit by a taxi. The accident occurred on the main road in his locality.
It was around 8pm on 15 January. A taxi coming from Pamplemousses and heading towards Port Louis hit Chabeelall Dhuwal head on. At that very moment the 50-year-old was crossing the road. Chabeelall Dhuwal was injured and taken to the northern hospital in an ambulance of the Emergency Medical Service (Samu). After receiving treatment, he was admitted to the ward.
Chabilall Dhuwal was certified dead at around 6.50pm in the early evening of Sunday 2 April. His body was subsequently taken to the morgue of the Dr A.G. Jeetoo Hospital in Port Louis for an autopsy. The autopsy, carried out by Dr Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer, attributed his death to septicaemia.
The driver of the taxi, 54 years old and living in Plaine-Verte was arrested on Monday, April 3. He was brought before the Pamplemousses court on a provisional charge of manslaughter. He was later released on bail. Chabeelall Dhuwal’s funeral took place on Monday 3 April at 1pm.
In the early hours of Monday morning, a pedestrian was struck by a white car at the corner of Royal Road and Macadam in Baie du Tombeau. The vehicle did not stop. The 58 year old victim, who lives in the area, was transported to the North Hospital in an ambulance from the Samu. The images of this accident were recorded by a Safe City camera.
The accident occurred at around 12.45am on Monday 3 April. The driver of the car is being sought by the police.
