Winner of two Group 1 races in 2021, Frosted Gold will be hard to beat in the main race of the meeting which will be organized by the People’s Turf Club PLC this Saturday at Champ-de-Mars.
Frosted Gold ended the 2021 season with two great wins. This gray horse, a product of stallion All Too Hard (AUS) and the mare Mary d’Or (FR), owned by Ricky Maingard and Jean-Michel Lee -Shim was bought at a high price in South Africa to run the big races in Mauritius. He took his time to be back to his best, and he ran on his true value when he dominated his opponents in the Princess Margareth Cup (1400m – G1). Frosted Gold was impressive in the last classic race of the season, the Duke Of York Cup or the Gold Cup (1600m- G1) on December 5, 2021. He raced off the pace before producing a blistering finish to beat his stablemate Undercover Agent.
Frosted Gold is a classy horse. Trainer Ricky Maingard trained him with care and he showed that he his back to his best during his gallop last Tuesday. He has a plum draw at the start which will be very useful for him to follow in an ideal position. He will be difficult to beat despite his heavy handicap of 62 kg.
There will be some pace in this race with several fast horses such as Colour My Fate, Triple Fate Line, Padre Pio and Wall Tag. Colour My Fate has just won over 990m on the first race meeting. He is in excellent physical condition and will be dangerous if he is able to get a soft lead. Padre Pio never confirmed his good South African reputation last season with only one win. He seems better this year and he can show us a whole new face this season. The danger will come mainly from the two excellent finishers, Dynamite Jack and Haylor. Dynamite Jack has won twice in 2021. He has been very lively in training in recent weeks, but has a bad draw at the start. While Haylor, winner of four races last year, may upset the odds as he is in better physical condition after his good performance over 990m on the first meeting.
