He Steals A Rs 1.7 Million BMW During A Test Drive

A resident of Forest-Side found himself in the early evening of Friday, July 8 behind bars at the police station of Flacq. This for having had the urge to drive a BMW E 200 worth Rs 1.7 million during a test drive the same day in Moka, but did not return it to a dealer. Suspect Kailash Ram Bonomally, 36, a clerk at Sicom was brought before the Bail and Remand Court (BRC) on Saturday, July 9. He is facing a provisional charge of theft.

This whole affair started on the morning of Friday, July 8, at about 10:30 am. Kailash Bonomally was visiting a car dealership in Moka. He introduced himself as a New Grove resident and showed a preference for German cars. After he made a visit to the showroom the salesman showed him some German cars. He then opted for a test drive in a 2016 BWM E 200 in navy blue. The salesman granted his request.

The salesman then removed the car from the showroom for a test drive. The customer was sitting in the front passenger seat. For this test drive the car was driven along Verdun By Pass. On the way, the customer asked to drive the car, the salesman accepted. Back in front of this sales showroom in Moka, the customer stayed in the vehicle and then sped off after the salesman got out.

He had to alert the police before going to the police station in Moka to report this case of theft. In the meantime, a radio message was communicated throughout the Eastern Division. The Information Room of the police who was informed of this theft relayed the message to all the police stations of the country and also to track the stolen car on the images of surveillance cameras of Safe City.

At around 6pm on Friday, July 8, police officers from the Moka Criminal Investigation Division (CID), led by Inspector Ghoorun, Curepipe CID headed by Assistant Superintendent of Police, Sailesh Kumar Omrawo and the men of Assistant Superintendent of Police, Jheengut from Moka CID went to Icery Road in Forest-Side and proceeded to the arrest of Kailash Bonomally.

The suspect was quick to confess his guilt in the theft case. He was to lead investigators to a parking lot in the yard of a nursing home in Curepipe where the stolen car was recovered. The car was towed to the CID office in Moka and the suspect was handed over to these investigators.
