Government Is Investing Massively In Sports And Infrastructural Development Around The Island Says The Prime Minister

Mr. Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, the prime minister, emphasized the significance of regularly participating in physical and sporting activities to maintain an active lifestyle and retain good health.

He was addressing yesterday afternoon at the opening of the Port-Louis Municipal Council’s sports complex at Marie Reine de la Paix. There were several notable people in attendance, including the Vice-Prime Minister, Dr. Mohammad Anwar Husnoo, Minister of Local Government and Disaster Risk Management, and Lord Mayor of Port Louis, Mr. Mahfooz Moussa Cader Saib.

The sports complex, which cost about Rs 4.2 million to build, has a field for handball, volleyball, and futsal as well as spectator seats.

The National Sport and Physical Activity Policy, which aims to promote regular physical activity among the public and build a sports culture, was a major focus of the Prime Minister’s speech. He added that it is past time for the populace to comprehend the significance of being physically active and that the government prioritizes the promotion of sporting activities.

Government, he stressed, is investing massively in sports and infrastructural development in different localities around the island in a bid to facilitate access to sports activities and equipment. He spoke on various projects that are being implemented in the region of Port-Louis to ensure the well-being and wellness of the inhabitants.

The Prime Minister mentioned that another major development, a sports arena comprising of a squash court, badminton courts, gym and amphitheatre amounting to the tune of Rs 151 million, will be constructed near Dr. Idriss Goomany Community Centre in Port Louis.

Speaking of other initiatives, he observed that several football and futsal grounds are being refurbished with adequate lighting to cater to the needs of working people.

As regards the falling of rocks from Montagne des Signaux, Mr Jugnauth indicated that the assistance of an expert from Reunion Island is being sought by the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, to address the issue and ensure the safety of citizens.

He emphasized that government is making every effort to encourage people to exercise and use the sports facilities to lower the risk of non-communicable diseases and foster a healthy society.

The Lord Mayor, for his part, emphasized that the government is making every effort to advance the welfare of the populace despite the COVID-19 pandemic and the war between Russia and Ukraine. With the help of the Government, several initiatives are being implemented to further develop the urban landscape, he added.
