Fuel Crisis: Rubis Energy CEO Jean-Christian Bergeron Deported Over Economic Sabotage

Must Read

Rubis Kenya Managing Director and CEO Jean-Christian Bergeron has been deported out of the country on accusations of economic sabotage due to the ongoing fuel crisis in Kenya.

After a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta, Energy Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma recommended further sanctions against oil marketing companies that were complicit in creating the fuel shortage in the country.

The measures by the government comes a day after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) stated that the oil marketing firms were selling fuel that was meant for the Kenyan market outside the country.

Documents sighted by EYEGAMBIA revealed that, the said individual who is the Managing Director of an oil company called Rubis Energie has been creating artificial shortage of oil through hoarding to escalate economic crisis in the country.

Additionally, records show that, his firm has reported higher export volumes of oil whilst the local channels that serves the Kenyan market remains with minimal fuel at a higher rate.

According to the laws of Kenya, this type of crime is categorized as a serious one which attracts a prison term of up to 10 years. The law also sets a fine of Sh1 million (over $8,500).

His deportation has critics calling for African countries to review and nationalize the ownership of major oil companies to avoid artificial economic crisis of such nature.

It is a norm to see major businesses, ranging from the mining sector to oil and gas with huge economic potentials being owned by foreign multinationals; a practice which is a direct threat to national security.

Some critics share the view that, foreign owners of such businesses deliberately hike prices to escalate economic crisis. Do you share in this view?
