Environment Waste Disposal Centres To Combat Illegal Dumping

Must Read

The illegal dumping of waste in vacant lots or wastelands must be discouraged at all costs. This is why the authorities have decided to set up waste collection centres in several regions of the country. And so to give an alternative to Mauritians who want to get rid of bulky waste.

After the one in Mare Chicose, a second waste disposal centre was officially opened on Thursday 28 October in Caroline, in the Bel Air region, Flacq.

For Kavi Ramano, the Minister of the Environment, this project is in line with the circular economy policy. He says that 540,000 tonnes of waste are buried at Mare-Chicose. According to some studies, much of this waste can be recycled. Hence, a Memorundum Of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the ministry and the recycling companies.

Minister Kavi Ramano explained that in the waste collection centres, the public can bring in all bulky waste, such as mattresses, old metals, refrigerators, construction debris, furniture, used oil, tyres among others.

Kavin Ramano said that it is free of charge and also that the law has been amended to allow a private individual to transport his bulky waste himself.

The authorities are planning to build three more waste collection centres in other parts of the country with the same objectives.
