Must Read

The government does not spare any means in its fight against the drug mafia. Important seizures at sea this week. 70 kg of cannabis were seized, with an estimated market value of Rs 42 million in a boat with four people on board was intercepted on the high seas at Rivière-Noire by members of the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (Adsu) during the day of Thursday, July 1st. The anti-drug squad strongly suspects that this boat was returning from Reunion Island.

One of the suspects jumped into the water and is being actively sought. The three other suspects were arrested on a provisional charge of drug trafficking and will be brought before the court of Bambous this Friday, July 2. This major seizure was made possible by an ADSU operation with the assistance of the National Coast Guard (NCG) and the logistical support of the police helicopter. A team of ADSU led by Assistant Superintendent of Police, Rajendranath Jhurry, under the supervision of Superintendent Jacques Jean Pierre, head of ADSU South Division, had suspicions about the importation of this drug, after a speedboat had been reported stolen the day before. The investigators immediately thought of a drug import in Reunion because this episode had already been played out last year.

The different police units were thus prepared for any eventuality and once the suspicious boat was spotted at Rivière-Noire, the police helicopter was deployed, while the NCG went to the scene with members of the ADSU. Aware that they were trapped, the individuals wanted to get rid of the bags by throwing them into the open sea. One of the suspects even threw himself overboard to swim away, without being caught. However, the police were able to recover the bags, which contained the 70 kg of drugs.

The investigators suspect that they would be part of a network involved in the illicit trafficking of gandia from Reunion Island. Since May, the CCID has been investigating drug trafficking on the Mauritius-Reunion axis. With this catch, the investigators are getting closer and closer to dismantle this network operating in the North of the country.

On the other hand, the owner of the boat was asked to give more details about this theft. According to the 32-year-old man living in Baie-du-Cap, his speedboat would have drifted or was stolen between 2:00 pm on Wednesday, June 30 and 9:00 am on Thursday, July 1.
