Salib Meerhossen denies having murdered 34-year-old South African Lara Rijs in August 2017. Meerhossen was the security guard of the residential complex where Rijs lived until her body was found by two colleagues.
The DNA of the accused has been found on the bed, bedsheet and even on the body of the victim.
But before the Assizes, Salib Meerhossen has pleaded not guilty.
The Court has so far heard the testimonies of Dr Sudesh Kumar Gungadin who practiced the autopsy and representative of the Forensic Science Laboratory.
According to the police inquiry, Meerhossen raped the South African lady before cutting her throat.
He denies being a murderer and is defended by counsel Ravi Rutnah.

Lara Rijs was 34 years old and held South African and Dutch citizenship. Rijs arrived in Mauritius where she worked as a manager in Port Louis at the Geneva Management Group global financial services. According to Rijs’s LinkedIn profile, she studied at Rhodes University‚ Unisa and the Edinburgh Business School. She worked at Standard Bank and Absa from January 2005 until December 2007 before moving to Geneva‚ Switzerland‚ in January 2008.
The security guard Sahib Meerhossen has been arrested in connection with Rijs’s murder. Sahib Meerhossen was arrested after Rijs’s body was found in a pool of blood on Monday afternoon.
