Democratisation Of Taxis’ Operation: A 5-Year Struggle!

Must Read

A sigh of relief for the Island Taxi Owners and Drivers Association. The Supreme Court has voted in favour of their fight to be able to operate in hotels too. This fight has lasted 5 years

The Tourism Authority (TA) regulations only allowed taxis to operate with hotel patents. But this was democratised by the highest court on Wednesday 29. Their ban on access to hotels, which had been in effect since 2016, has been lifted.

During his press conference, Georges Ah- Yan, the spokesperson for the Island Taxi Owners and Drivers Association has announced that all taxi drivers, who hold a Public Service Vehicle Licence, are entitled “to take a customer of any hotel as soon as they are called“. He also added that “their licence allowed them to do this from the beginning but there was a misunderstanding between the Tourism Authority and the National Transport Authority. It was wrong from the start. The Supreme Court has been able to clear up the misunderstanding and the change took five years. The taxi operators are more confident and reassured

Thus, whether they carry a ‘licence’ from the airport, any taxi stand or another hotel, they are now able to operate freely. Customers, however, will have to make a reservation as it was already amicably the case.
