Covid–19: Is It Time To Reopen Our Borders?

Must Read

If some people are happy about the reopening of our borders, others do not hide their concern. The sudden increase of positive cases of Covid-19 in the recent days does not reassure them.

Certainly, the reopening of the borders is inevitable for an economic recovery, especially for the tourist industry. As Jean Michel Pitot, the President of the Association of Hoteliers and Restaurateurs of Mauritius (AHRIM) pointed out, “More than 100,000 people were waiting for this decision. A recovery of the entire tourism sector can be initiated at the end of the year,” he said.

However, at present, the country is facing an unprecedented wave of Covid-19 contamination, even though less than 50% of the population is vaccinated. Moreover, according to stakeholders, vaccination is a factor that does nothing to stop the spread of the virus.

They refer to the case of the Seychelles.  Indeed, since last month, more than 60% of its population has been vaccinated, but this has not been enough to stop the spread of Covid-19. According to the Seychelles authorities among the current active cases, 33% have been fully vaccinated (two doses).

Seychelles, which as a reminder, is the first destination to have opened the door to vaccinated travelers by relying on the immunity of its population.

Experts and officials of the archipelago, however, say that the pandemic in Seychelles does not mean that the vaccines do not work.

Still, the Mauritian authorities want to be careful about this first phase of the reopening of its borders from July 15. The authorities are also in possession of equipment to study the different variants. But for the moment, the Ministry of Health has not yet communicated anything on the subject.
