To denounce the rise in the prices of fuel, the Association of Consumers of Mauritius has announced the organization of a “rally” on 22 January in the capital. Jayen Chellum faced the press this Wednesday. The secretary general of ACIM maintains that the recent price increase is artificial, unfair and unacceptable. He added that a letter will be sent to the police the same day to get the authorization needed. He appealed to citizens, political parties and other citizen movements to participate. Since Wednesday 29 December, petrol and diesel have become more expensive. The price of a litre of petrol and diesel has increased by Rs 5.50 and Rs 3.70, respectively. This is a decision of the Petroleum Pricing Committee.
Between the heavy taxes and the increase in fuel prices, the members of the association are of the opinion that Mauritians had to review their way of consuming. “Gouvernman pe kraz ledo konsomater,” he explained. Jayen Chellum asked the public to join their cause: “We are not a political party. We don’t have agents in every constituency, but we have consumers.
Several other actions are planned in order to raise public awareness as much as possible.
