China Develops Its Maiden Open-Source Computer OS, OpenKylin

Must Read

In a bid to become totally independent in terms of technology, China has launched OpenKylin, its first regional open-source desktop operating system, according to official media.

China’s version of the open-source Linux operating system, which was made available on Wednesday and is based on the current version, was created by a group of about 4,000 developers and is employed in the country’s space programme as well as sectors like banking and energy, they added.

According to state media, based on an industry report, the behemoth operating systems market in China last year was valued 15.5 billion yuan ($2.1 billion).

China’s IT industry has been working towards developing an operating system that is independent of American technology in recent years, and many businesses and organisations have contributed to the creation of the OpenKylin system.

The ministry of industry and information technology’s China Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team is its most noteworthy supporter.

A large number of Chinese tech firms are attempting at coming out with operating systems that would nullify the need for Apple’s MacOS and Microsoft’s Windows in China.

As a result, one Chinese company UnionTech Software Technology Co Ltd has been working on the “Unity operating system”.
