Government is committed to mainstream Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa, and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) and disseminate related knowledge in Mauritius, and in this context, Farmers Service Centres will be used to hold regional Ayurveda sessions.

This announcement was made by the Attorney General, Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Mr Maneesh Gobin, on Satuday  morning, during the launching of the premier of the Ayush Ka Amrit Mela, an Ayurvedic Medical Camp, at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture in Phoenix.

The Mela was jointly organised by the High Commission of India and the Association of Ayurvedic Physicians in collaboration with Ayuryoga International Mauritius.

The Minister handed over 100 plants with therapeutic virtues, including Aloe Vera, Mint and Peru Balm, lemongrass and rosemary, on the occasion. A comic book conceptualised by the National Medicinal Plants Board, aiming to raise awareness among children on the importance of medicinal plants and their use for home remedies, was also distributed.

In his address, Minister Gobin recalled that late Sir Anerood Jugnauth as a visionary leader, endeavoured to popularise AYUSH in Mauritius and emphasised that today, the AYUSH Unit in the Ministry of Health and Wellness has taken shape. He added that a local coordinator has been posted in the Ministry.

Mr Gobin also affirmed his strong intent to include AYUSH in his Ministry’s activities. We are ready to partner with the High Commission of India and other agencies to disseminate knowledge about the topic among the population, he said.

The Minister also put forward his intention to cultivate traditional and medicinal plants, upon expert advice, in our forests.

As for the Indian High Commissioner, Mrs K. Nandini Singla, she observed that India’s most precious and enduring contribution to the world is Ayurvedic knowledge. It teaches us the need for a sound balance among our body, mind and soul, to reach bliss and happiness, as well as how to nourish our soul with peace, love, acceptance, and develop these qualities, she stated.

According to her, this has become more relevant in today’s world which is dominated by technology, as it will help one to strike a sound balance and also for preventive healthcare.

She further asserted that India wants to bring Ayurveda closer to all Mauritians and is looking forward to bring a Centre of excellency and thriving hub of wellness to help them learn what a balanced life is all about.

Mrs Singla also expressed gratitude to the Government for its collaboration and commitment to promote AYUSH in Mauritius.
