Steven James Leung Wan Sung, 31 years old, seriously injured in a traffic accident on Thursday afternoon, April 14, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday evening, April 17. The motorcyclist, a resident of Rouillard lane, Baie-du-Tombeau, was hit by a car on Nicolay road, St. Croix, not far from the Latanier bridge. The driver of the car, a 71 year old Beaubassinois, was brought before the Port-Louis court this Monday morning, April 18, on a provisional charge of manslaughter. He was later released on bail.
It was around 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 14. Steven Leung Wan Sung was heading to Port Louis on his Honda Unicorn motorcycle. As he was negotiating the curve just after the Latanier Bridge on Nicolay Road, St. Croix, an oncoming Toyota Corolla left his path and hit him head-on. The impact was of a rare violence that this vehicle tore off a part of the parapet on the left side of this road.
Steven Leung Wan Sung, who was seriously injured, was bleeding on the asphalt. A hostile crowd gathered at the scene of the accident. When police arrived at the Abercrombie, St. Croix police station, the driver of the car was not present. An individual armed with an iron bar was seen violently attacking the car. He smashed the windshields and windows of the vehicle.
Steven Leung Wan Sung was taken to Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port Louis. After first aid was administered, he was placed in an intensive care unit ward. His health condition was already considered critical.
Steven Leung Wan Sung breathed his last around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 17. His body was autopsied on Monday, April 18 at the Dr. Jeetoo Hospital morgue by Dr. Prem Chamane. He attributed the cause of death to sepsis.
At Leung Wan Sung’s home in Rouillard lane, Baie-du-Tombeau, there is consternation. As soon as the death of this young father of two young children was announced, relatives, friends and acquaintances began to flock to offer their sympathy to his wife.
Steven Leung Wan Sung’s funeral is scheduled for this Tuesday, April 19th at 1pm. The funeral ceremony will take place at the Good Shepherd Church in Baie-du-Tombeau. He will then be buried in Roche-Bois Cemetery.
