A Sum Of Rs 500,000 In Foreign Currency Stolen

Must Read

A cashier at Change Express in Grand Bay was attacked by an individual as she returned to the branch on the morning of Saturday, December 31 with a sum of Rs 500,000 in foreign currency in a backpack. The 36 year old woman tried to resist her attacker when two other suspects arrived. She had no choice but to let them go with the loot when one of these thugs threatened her with a sword. Three hours later, the Grand Bay police arrested one of the three men who matched the descriptions of the alleged thieves. Although he denies being involved, he was identified by the cashier. This man Ashley Ashvin Lungur, 35 years old, lives in Camp Carol, Grand Bay.

It was during the afternoon of Friday, December 31 that this cashier of Change Express, still under the effect of shock, went to the police station of Grand-Baie to report this case of theft. This resident of Rivière du Rempart explained that she has been working for this agency for nine years and that for the last two years she has been assigned to the Grand-Baie branch. On Friday, December 31, around 8:50 a.m., in the company of a 60-year-old security guard, she went to the branch of Change Express in Pereybère to make a deposit of money and at the same time to recover foreign currency in the amount of Rs 500,000.

She put the money in a black backpack before getting into a metallic green Toyota Corolla driven by the security guard to return to the Grand Bay branch. On that day, traffic was heavy, so the car stopped at the edge of Mahatma Gandhi Street, Grand Bay. She and the security guard got out of the car and continued a short walk. Suddenly a man wearing a mask approached her and tried to snatch her bag. She struggled with all her strength until she was on the ground. Two other individuals joined the first one and one of them came towards her armed with a sword and threatened her with it.

The thirty-year-old then had no choice but to drop the backpack containing the loot. She was wounded in the left arm.  Around 12:45 pm this Friday, December 31 on the Royal Road of Grand-Baie near the library, Sergeant Haurdhan arrested Ashley Lungur. He was taken into custody at the Rivière du Rempart police station. He was brought before the Bail and Remand Court this Saturday, January 1, 2021.
