Mevin Veerapen is the fourth young victim in Mauritius. He was 15 years old, positive but double vaccinated with Pfizer. He died on Friday afternoon, 25 February 2022.
This teenager from Piton was a student at Universal College in Rivière-du-Rempart. His first symptoms were tingling and sore throat as well as a slight fever. His father took him to the hospital in the North, not suspecting that he was suffering from anything more than the onset of a fever. He tested positive to the Rapid Test. Being twice vaccinated twice, they advised his father to make Mevin observe a self-isolation.
The young man was no better the next day. He was in isolation in his room while the family went about their daily routine. He even talked to his father during the day. It was his father who noticed that his son had already died, as his wife told him that Mevin was sleeping in his room. When he went to see him, he was astonished to find his son’s body already cold. The family understood that Mevin’s health had deteriorated very quickly. His body was taken to the North Hospital for an autopsy scheduled for this Saturday. The boy was not suffering from any particular condition. The hospital released the boy’s body on the same Saturday and the funeral of Mevin Veerapen took place in the same afternoon. The autopsy report was sent to the Ministry of Health.
As a reminder, the first young victim was Keira Esther, 15 months old, who died on 13 September 2021, a 17-year-old resident of Petit Raffray, who was not vaccinated and died on 25 November last year, Jibraan Chataaroo, 15 years old, resident of Plaine Verte, who was doubly vaccinated with Pfizer and was then a student at Sir Abdool Razack Mohammed SSS. The latter’s health also deteriorated very quickly and he was even placed on artificial respiration.
