A horrific scene on Lecornu Street, St. Croix late Monday afternoon, February 7. An accident of rare violence occurred when two motorcycles collided. The impact was so severe that one of the two drivers had his right foot severed at the knee. The victim, Lino Louis, 23 years old and living on New Sainte-Marie Street, Sainte-Croix, was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis, after having undergone two delicate surgical procedures.
It was around 5:30 pm that this terrible accident took place. Lino Louis had just visited his mother who was admitted to the hospital. Suffering from diabetes, she had her left foot amputated on December 28, 2021. It was on a blue Kawasaki motorcycle belonging to his cousin that Lino Louis left Dr. Jeetoo Hospital after visiting hours. He had to drop off the motorcycle in Lecornu, Sainte-Croix and before his cousin accompanied him to Pamplemousses for a job.
The young man took the route Royale de Vallée des Prêtres, then Sophia lane before turning left on rue Lecornu. His motorcycle collided with another almost white two-wheeled vehicle in front of the Central Water Authority (CWA) depot. This driver Jérémie Bégué, 36 years old and resident of State Land Cité La Cure injured was admitted to the ward. This thirty year old driver was submitted to a breathalyzer test which was negative.
All the relatives of Lino Louis are devastated by the news of this accident. Unfortunately, they say, that his mother could not be made aware of the accident of her son. A news that could cause the deterioration of his health. The young man had to undergo a second surgery because the knee of his right foot was crushed. His hand, which was fractured, also had to be operated on.
An investigation has been initiated at the Abercrombie, St. Croix Police Station to determine the exact circumstances of this accident.
