In September 2021, Joe Biden announced that the United States of America would donate 500 million doses of U.S-made vaccines to the developing world. 203,580 doses of one of the best-performing vaccines against the Coronavirus and the Delta and Omicron variants, Pfizer-BioNTech reached Mauritian soil on Friday, December 16. So far, the U.S. Government has donated 302 million vaccines to 110 countries. Out of which, 387,270 have been donated to Mauritius.

This is the third donation of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines to Mauritius. A first consignment of the vaccine was delivered in September, and a second consignment arrived on November 15. The vaccine donation is part of the Biden Administration’s commitment to leading an international and coordinated vaccine effort to end the COVID-19 pandemic.

U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Thomas Kohl said, “This is the third U.S.-Government donation of vaccines to Mauritius since September and once again, this donation reaffirms our commitment to support Mauritius’ vaccination efforts and help protect the population. I want to emphasize that this donation comes with no strings attached. We all know safe and effective vaccines are the best way to control this pandemic and the U.S. Government strongly encourages everyone to get vaccinated. It’s been nearly two years since the world has been battling with the devastating and deadly effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. As part of our strong bilateral relationship, the United States is proud to contribute to the Mauritian vaccination campaign.”

Minister of Health and Wellness Kailesh Jagutpal said, “My Ministry fully acknowledges the precious support forwarded by the United States Government to Mauritius and to the African continent.

This donation will help protect the population of Mauritius and Rodrigues, including persons under the age of 18, from the COVID-19 virus and prevent the further spread of the virus’ dangerous new strains. The U.S. Government and the U.S. Embassy fully support the Mauritian authorities’ vaccination efforts and encourage everyone to get vaccinated.
