Three Youths Arrested For A Series Of Thefts In The North

A police operation set up by elements of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Grand-Baie during the day of Wednesday, July 6, led to the arrest of three young people suspected of being involved in five cases of theft in the north of the country. Under close interrogation, these suspects, Jean Lucas Jeffrey René, 19 years old from Pavillon, Cap-Malheureux, Leo Chris Louis, 18 years old from Camp-Gervais, Cap-Malheureux and Sven Moorghen, 19 years old from NHDC, Cap-Malheureux were quick to confess their involvement in these thefts.

Jeffrey René’s home was first raided on suspicion of four thefts. However, he only confessed to the theft from a 36-year-old housekeeper in Petit-Raffray on Monday, June 20. On that day, he took a purse, two bank cards, a national identity card, a wallet, an umbrella and a pair of glasses from the optician Mathieu. The whole is estimated at Rs 15 000. During the police raid, the two bank cards, the identity card, the wallet, an umbrella and a pair of glasses were recovered.

Jeffrey René also confessed to be the author of a robbery with violence on a construction path in Chemin Pieds, Pereybère. It was on the evening of Friday, June 24. Armed with a club and a knife, he had attacked a security guard before robbing him of his identity card, his cell phone, his flashlight and the sum of Rs 1200. The whole is estimated at 16 500. The identity card and the flashlight of the security guard were found during the search of Jeffrey René’s home. The latter also confessed to two other cases of theft. One was to the detriment of a 44 year old manager in Pereybère in the afternoon of Monday July 4th. Four bottles of champagne worth Rs 16 000 had been stolen and the other theft, he had committed on Tuesday, June 7 at Cap-Malheureux. He had forced an Xpanda door to gain access to the home of a 46 year old entrepreneur living in Cap-Malheureux. He was able to seize several bottles of alcoholic beverages, a cell phone, three golf clubs and the sum of Rs 500.

Shortly after, Chris Louis was arrested on suspicion of robbing a Bangladeshi man in Cap-Malheureux in the early evening of Monday 27 June. The victim, a 32 year old bricklayer was bleeding profusely from the forehead when he was found. He also had wounds on his lips. He had stated that he had been accosted by an individual who had taken a certain amount of money from him. The suspect confessed to this case.

Sven Moorghen confessed his participation in the assault and robbery of the guard of a construction site in Pereybere.

The three suspects were brought before the court of Pamplemousses this Thursday morning, July 7.
