Seventy-Year-Old Man Hit In Crosswalk And Dies Of His Injuries

He was crossing the road on a crosswalk on the morning of Wednesday, July 13, on Souillac Street, Port-Louis when he was hit head-on by a motorcycle. Marie Michel Julie, 70 years old and a resident of Madagascar Street, Port-Louis did not survive. He died at the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis around 6:00 am on Wednesday morning, July 20th.

The driver of the motorcycle, 71 years old and living in Belle-Etoile, Coromandel, was brought before the court of Port-Louis on Wednesday, July 20th before being released on bail. He is facing a provisional charge of manslaughter.

It was around 9:40 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13, that this accident occurred on Souillac Street, Port-Louis, near the Edgard Millien government school. Michel Julie was hit by a Keeway motorcycle as he was crossing the road on a crosswalk.  He was transported to the hospital in an ambulance of the Emergency Medical Service (SAMU), while the driver of the motorcycle was taken to the hospital in a police vehicle.

The victim, also known as Michel, lived alone. His identity was unknown until his sister went to the Central Barracks to report him missing. It was then that the police established her identity with the person who was injured in a traffic accident.

An autopsy was performed on the body of Michel Julie at the morgue of the Dr. Jeetoo Hospital around 10:30 am on Wednesday, July 20 by Dr. Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer. He attributed the cause of death to multiple injuries.   An investigation has been initiated in this case at the Central Barracks.

The funeral of Michel Julie is scheduled for this Friday, July 22 at 10 am. He will be buried in the Saint Jean cemetery in Quatre-Bornes.
