The Sands Suites Resort and SPA has been facing problems of erosion of the beach located in front of this hotel establishment in Wolmar. The management team of this hotel, being aware of the vulnerability of their development to shoreline erosion, sought the help of specialists in the field to develop a coastal protection strategy to protect this beach that is shrinking by the day.
The Investment Company, Mauriplage Investment Company Ltd wishes to carry out rehabilitation work on this beach in order to restore the facade of this hotel establishment. The promoter of the project has thus signified its intention to build breakwaters, piers and to refloat the beach.
Before going ahead with the project, the developer has sought the expertise of Arup (Mauritius) Ltd, Consulting Engineers, to prepare an Environmental Impact Report on the project.
According to the modeling exercise conducted by Sanctuary Plage professor Kerry Black, the structures that will be placed in the sea will not affect nearby areas because each reef will act within a clearly defined zone of influence between the reef and the shoreline.
“It is essential to maintain the quality of service of the luxury resort. Thus, restoration of the waterfront must be undertaken. The detailed scientific study supporting this EIS revealed the causes of beach erosion and an appropriate remediation strategy. The construction of the three new reef structures will have positive impacts on the shoreline through the creation of a salient and protection during extreme events. All work in the lagoon will have impacts and the overall benefits of implementing the proposed work will create a new positive for all stakeholders. “This project is the subject of a report that was filed with the Ministry of the Environment.
Located in the east of the island, this hotel occupies an area of 2.56 hectares. With a beach of 230 meters long, it has 90 suites and 3 restaurants.
