The girl explained that her stepfather tried to abuse her twice in 2020. The suspect was arrested this Wednesday, October 20, on a provisional charge of Causing Harm to a Child. He was released on parole on Thursday, October 21. The child who said she was abused and assaulted by her mother was taken into care by the Child Development Unit (CDU). This is after she obtained an Emergency Protection Order (EPO) in court.
A police officer assigned to the Police Family Protection Unit in Goodlands gave a statement to the Grade 5 student that on Friday, October 15, she was slapped by her 37-year-old mother. The mother hit her in the face and also scratched her cheek, neck and hands. The girl was wounded and bled.
On two occasions, the girl said, her stepfather tried to sexually abuse her. This offense occurred while she was sleeping in the living room. After her statement was taken in the presence of a Family Welfare Protection Officer, she was admitted to the North Hospital. She had already been seen by a psychologist. After an EPO request was approved by the court, the child was taken into the care of the CDU.
Some villagers, having learned of the content of the girl’s statement, took violent action against Jonathan Jean around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 20. He was on the Royal Road in this locality when he was apprehended by a team of police officers after being lynched by a hostile crowd. On the day of his arrest, he was absent from work.
