Police Officer Arrested For Protesting Against Vaccination

A police officer assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division in Mahebourg was arrested in the early evening of Thursday 2 September by elements of the Central Criminal Investigation Department (CCID).  He was arrested for participating in a demonstration in front of the Government House against vaccination on the same day. Equipped with placards, this policeman accompanied by his wife remained at this location for nearly half an hour.

It was at around 2pm on Thursday 2 September that a police sergeant assigned to Government House went to Pope Hennessy police station to report the matter. In his statement he explained that he was on duty outside Government House when a demonstration against vaccination began at about 11.15am. Two people were involved, one a police officer from Mahebourg Police Station.

Early Thursday evening, a team of CCID officers went to the officer’s home and arrested him. After being questioned during the evening, the officer was subsequently taken to the Vacoas detention centre to be held. This Friday morning, he will be brought before the Port-Louis court. The police do not intend to object to his release on bail.
