Police Officer Acting As Driving Instructor Questioned

Must Read

“Missie mo pena oken permi, mo pe zis pe tras enn lavi”. This is what a police officer assigned to the Quatre-Bornes police station said to one of his colleagues from the Divisional Supporting Unit (DSU) of the Central Division on Thursday, November 4, shortly after he was stopped on Route Royale in Curepipe. He was acting as a driving instructor with a 23 year old girl in his car, a grey Nissan March.

It is on the basis of the information that this team of the DSU intercepted this car with a learner driver at the wheel. The 40-year-old police officer, who lives in Curepipe, was sitting in the front passenger seat. The officer was asked to produce his driving instructor’s license to which he had to state, “Missie mo pena oken permi, mo pe zis pe tras enn lavi”. The learner driver and the unlicensed police driving instructor were asked to accompany the police to the DSU office in Curepipe.

The learner driver, when questioned, explained to the DSU police officers that the police officer assigned to the Quatre-Bornes police station had presented himself as a driving instructor. She paid the sum of Rs 1000 for a two-hour driving lesson. The police officer was thus informed of the crime he committed. He was fined Rs 5000 for “using M/Vehicle for another purpose” and Rs 2000 for the offence of “teaching for gain without an instruction licence”. The police monitor refused to take the second ticket. He was informed that it will be sent to him by mail.

The police officer and his student were allowed to leave the DSU office in Curepipe afterwards.
