Picnic Turns Tragic For Eastern Family

Must Read

A 39-year-old woman from an eastern village drowned on Thursday November 2 at îlot Bénitier. She was with other family members in a canoe that capsized. They all ended up in the water. The thirty-something woman found herself in difficulty. Fished out, she was quickly brought ashore before being taken to the Dr Yves Cantin hospital in Rivière Noire. A doctor on duty is expected to pronounce her dead.

The family had come to picnic on the islet Bénitier. Nothing was expected to happen. They had left the landing stage at La Gaulette to reach the islet and spend the day there. However, the catamaran aboard which she had boarded could not dock 300 meters from the islet. It was on the way back that the dinghy capsized. The victim and five other family members ended up in the water. She was the least lucky.

After being fished out of the water, she was barely breathing. The catamaran returned to shore. She was then rushed to Rivière Noire hospital. The doctor on duty was only able to pronounce her dead. An autopsy is due to be carried out at the Victoria Hospital morgue in Candos.

The victim is Zuryena Peeroo, 30, from Centre de Flacq. Nine people were in the canoe when it overturned. The cause of death is asphyxia due to drowning.

Friday Le Matinal offers its sincere condolences to the bereaved family.
