Motion Of No Confidence Against Government Tabled On Monday

Must Read

Xavier Luc Duval took on the task on Monday morning without delay. He kept his promise to serve a motion of censure to the government so that it “reverses its unhealthy decisions”. The Opposition has brought this debate back to Parliament “to hold the government accountable”.

Exceptional

This rare measure is only used in exceptional circumstances, and in the present case, this is following the series of tragedies on Friday 22 April. These facts were strongly commented on by all and all were against the government, the internal functioning of the police, and the bad management of the country in these times of crisis.

As Xavier Luc Duval clearly states, “The aim is for the government to reverse its decisions and its unhealthy policy. It must review its priorities and take important measures to help the population. Above all, all forms of generalized waste must be stopped. Immediate measures must be taken to lower the prices of petrol, medicines and basic foodstuffs. We must help the residents and families at the bottom of the ladder. These measures are urgent and necessary. The depreciation of the rupee must stop. It is the government that must tighten its belt. It must stop passing this burden on to the people.

Thus, all the parties opposing the government are showing unwavering support for the Opposition Leader’s motion. The latter also expects members of the government to lend him a hand in this logic. This motion should be debated and decisions taken within a month.

Eventful session

This session on Tuesday 26 April is already shaping up to be eventful.  The Prime Minister will be faced with other burning issues. MP Lobine will ask him for details and costs on the construction of the ‘Breakwater’ in Port Louis Harbour and Fort William. Labour MP, Mahen Gungapersad will query on the controversial incidents in Plaine-Magnien on 6 April and whether or not an investigation has been initiated. Labour MP, Osman Mohamed will ask about the qualifications and experience of the Board Members and the Chairman of the Discipline Forces Service Commission (DFSC). Joana Berenger of the MMM will want to know the PM’s position on the establishment of a select committee on climate change. In addition, there will also be questions addressed to the various ministries about the medical cannabis, the SSR Botanic Garden, expired medicines, fuel prices, the Kreol Morisen, and the Wetlands Bill.

The Beach Authority (Amendment) Bill and the National Flag, Arms of Mauritius, National Anthem and Other National Symbols of Mauritius Bill will be among the readings of the Prime Minister.

To be followed on Tuesday.
