Minister Hurreeram Effects Site Visits To Take Stock Of Drain Construction Projects

The Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development, Mr Mahendranuth Sharma Hurreeram, effected, today, site visits at Trio Road in Triolet, Camp La Cloche in Pointe aux Piments, and Avenue Belle Source in Pamplemousses, to take stock of progress of works with regards to construction of drains and flood mitigation projects in these regions.

The Minister of Labour, Human Resource Development and Training, Mr Soodesh Satkam Callichurn, the Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS), Mr Sharvanand Ramkaun, and other personalities were also present during the site visits.

Minister Hurreeram Takes Stock of Drain Construction Projects

In a statement, Minister Hurreeram highlighted that Government is investing significantly in various projects in these three regions, particularly for works being carried at Belle Source as the village is a flood prone area. He observed that costs of works in these regions amount to more than Rs 250 million and pointed out that several other upgrading projects aiming at mitigating flood risks in times of heavy rainfall are in the pipeline.

As for PPS Ramkaun, he underscored that inhabitants of these regions face several difficulties during the rainy season, and stated that these projects will contribute to avoid flooding in the future. He also indicated that several projects will be carried out in other regions, such as Tombeau Bay, once necessary land has been acquired.

Construction of additional drain at Trio Road

The scope of works, amounting to a total of some Rs 15,4 million, includes the construction of a total of 420 metres D500 drain along Trio Road with formers, covers and grating with an absorption length of 120 metres. To date, some 40% of works have been completed.

Construction of Attenuation Basin and Roadworks at Camp La Cloche

Some major excavation works for an attenuation basin, with depth of up to six metres for an approximate volume of 125,000 cubic metres, are currently being undertaken at Camp La Cloche. The construction of a reinforced concrete collector and intercepting drains over a length of some 650 metres, as well as road enlargement and reprofiling works over approximately 800 metres, will also be carried out. Costs amount to some Rs 112,2 million.

Flood Mitigation Measures at Avenue Belle Source

The main objective of the project, for which financial clearance to the tune of Rs 217,1 million has been obtained from the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development in 2020, is to implement a system of drains and associated infrastructure to protect human life and prevent material damage to property and infrastructure during heavy rainfall.

Drain Construction Projects

Works to be carried out include, among others: excavation works for attenuation basin of about 250,000 cubic metres; construction of two-metre-wide reinforced concrete covered drain over 340 metres and reinforced concrete open drain over 620 metres; construction of three-metre high masonry retaining walls over a length of about 500 metres; and reinstatement of existing tarred road over 375 metres and parking areas.
