In Melrose: 60-Year-Old Woman Killed By Car While Visiting A Relative

Marie Edmonde Florise Brasse, 61 years old also known as Fille met a tragic end in the afternoon of Thursday, March 2. This resident of Melville, Grand Gaube was fatally struck by a car as she crossed on Royal Road in Melrose in front of the high security prison. The victim did not survive her injuries.

It was shortly before 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 2 that this accident occurred. A white Volkswagen coming from Montagne Blanche and heading towards Quartier Militaire was driving on the Royal Road in Melrose. Arriving in front of the high security prison, the victim had to cross the road. She was hit head-on by the car and thrown a few meters away.

An ambulance of the Emergency Medical Service was requested at this place, but the doctor on board unfortunately had to note the death of the sexagenarian. Her body was transported to the morgue of the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis for an autopsy. The autopsy was performed at about 17:30 by Dr. Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer, who attributed her death to multiple injuries.

The driver of the car, a 29 year old technical animation artist living in the village of Sebastopol was taken to the police station of Montagne Blanche to be submitted to an alcohol test. The test was negative. After giving his statement, the driver was taken into custody at the Quartier Militaire police station. On Friday, March 3, he was brought before the court of Moka on a provisional charge of manslaughter. He was later released on bail.

Footage of this accident was captured by Safe City cameras. The victim was seen getting off a bus. Shortly thereafter, she suddenly crossed this road. That’s when she was hit by the speeding Volkswagen. According to information obtained by investigators, the 60-year-old was on her way to visit a relative.

The funeral of Florise Brasse took place this Friday, March 3 at 3 pm. After the funeral ceremony at the church of Saint Michel in Grand Gaube, she was buried in the cemetery of this coastal village.

An investigation has been initiated at the police station of Montagne Blanche to shed light on the exact circumstances of this accident.
