A 30-year-old bricklayer from Rivière des Créoles was caught by members of the public after stealing a 70-year-old woman’s chain. This happened in Biswa lane, Plaine Magnien on the afternoon of Monday May 29. He was handed over to police officers at the local police station after being lynched. The suspect, Nekitsingh Neeranjansing, who was complaining of pain, was taken to the Jawaharlall Nehru hospital in Rose-Belle for treatment. He was subsequently placed in a cell at the Grand Bois police station.

It was around 5 p.m. on Monday May 29. The septuagenarian was returning home from the Winners supermarket in Plaine Magnien. At a certain point, an individual called out to her, “guette ena enn zaffer ine tombe par deryer ou”. As soon as the septuagenarian turned around, he leaned her against a wall to force her gold chain from her neck. The thug had to flee immediately. The pendant fell onto the road.

Without losing her composure, the septuagenarian called for help. One of her neighbors arrived and tried to persuade the suspect. At the same time, he called a policewoman who was on patrol in a police vehicle with two officers. Meanwhile, the suspect was lynched by members of the public. When he was taken in charge by the three police officers, he was complaining of stomach pains. He said he had been assaulted by a group of people.

He was taken to Rose-Belle hospital, where he was treated and released. The suspect, Nekitsingh Neeranjansing, was brought before the Mahebourg court on the morning of Tuesday May 30 on a provisional charge of theft on the public highway.
