Must Read

A total of 13 families eligible under the Social Register of Mauritius (SRM), were handed over keys of their housing units, this afternoon in Port Louis, by the Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo.

This initiative, under the Full Concrete Housing (FCH) Unit Scheme, is a joint collaboration of the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity and the National Empowerment Foundation.

In her address, Minister Daureeawoo indicated that the objective of the FCH project is to provide decent housing units to eligible vulnerable families so that they can live in dignity and improve their living conditions as well as provide a safe, secure and peaceful environment to their children.

She underscored the necessity for beneficiaries to put in more efforts, sacrifice, discipline and determination to work towards a better future for themselves and their children. Government, she indicated, is putting a lot of emphasis on alleviating the poor living conditions of those at the lower rungs of the social ladder despite the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine and Russia War.

The Minister indicated that several schemes including the Empowerment Scheme, the Crèche Scheme, and the Upgrading Housing Scheme have been put at the disposal of vulnerable people to provide support and assistance.

Speaking about the Marshall Plan and its poverty alleviation and empowerment programmes, she stressed that the aim of Government was to ensure that vulnerable families stand on their own two feet. More than 230 housing units under the FHC have already been completed, she indicated, adding that the construction of some 12,000 houses will begin shortly and that 10% of these will be reserved for the NEF beneficiaries.

Furthermore, Minister Daureeawoo urged more people to register with the SRM to avail of all facilities and support provided by Government.

The housing units are of 50 m2 and are equipped with all the necessary facilities, amenities, security, and a harmonious environment where beneficiaries can live an active and healthy life in better conditions.
