The Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt hosted, on Friday 14 January 2022, in Ebène, a reception on the occasion of the Orthodox Christmas Day and the New Year, celebrated each year on 7 January and 14 January, respectively, in Egypt.

The Vice-President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Eddy Boissezon; the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Dr. Alya’a Samir Borhan; the spouse of late Sir Anerood Jugnauth, Lady Sarojini Jugnauth; several Ministers and Members of the Diplomatic Corps were present.

A prayer was also said by the President of the Council of Religions, Reverend Philippe Goupille.

In his address, the Vice-President underlined that the beginning of a new year is an opportunity to reflect on past accomplishments and to pave the way forward for a prosperous nation. “Previous years,” he said, “have been very challenging with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially on the economic and social fronts.”

“This year,” he added, “is no different as it is another reminder for us all to play a key role in limiting the spread of the COVID-19, thereby safeguarding the health of the population.” He thus called for the solidarity and fraternity of each and every one to face the unprecedented challenge of an invisible enemy that had affected the country in several ways.

For her part, the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Dr. Alya’a Samir Borhan, highlighted the longstanding relationship between Mauritius and Egypt, adding that they were bound by similar values of tolerance and ethnic harmony.

“Both countries,” she emphasised, “intend to further strengthen collaboration in areas of mutual interest to make it a win-win partnership for their people.”
