Drunk Bus Driver Assaults Two Police Officers

Kavish Kunniah, a bus driver with the National Transport Corporation (CNT), was arrested on the evening of Thursday December 7 for assaulting two police officers. This after he was stopped following an accident on Route Royale in Belle Vue Maurel. The 28-year-old, who lives in Saint Remy, Flacq, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was very violent with a police officer. Another policeman, who had come to the aid of his colleague, was punched twice in the chest. He also damaged the zipper of the first officer’s fluorescent vest. With great difficulty, he was subdued and arrested. He was given a breathalyzer test, which came back positive. He had ninety-one micrograms of alcohol in his breath.

Following a request concerning an accident, a team of police officers from the Rivière du Rempart police station went to Route Royale in Belle Vue Maurel. They found two vehicles on the scene, a blue Honda driven by a 35-year-old police officer assigned to the Piton detention center and living in Laventure, and a grey Toyota driven by a 27-year-old resident of L’Amitié. The driver of a Toyota Vitz was seen continuing towards Rivière du Rempart. Several people at the scene of the accident began shouting, “sofer loto Vitz la ki implike dan aksidan pe sove”.

A policeman quickly gave chase and was able to arrest the driver. He appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was very violent. Another policeman, who was assisting his colleague, was punched twice in the chest. He also tore the zipper of the first policeman’s fluorescent vest. However, it was with great difficulty that he was subdued and arrested. He was later identified as Kavish Kunniah, a CNT bus conductor.

He was taken to the Rivière du Rempart police station, where he was given a breathalyzer test by an Emergency Response Service officer. The test was positive. He had ninety-one micrograms of alcohol in his breath. The bus driver was taken into custody. This Friday morning, December 8, he was brought before the Pamplemousses court on a provisional charge of assault on a police officer.
