Driver Of A Car Dies After Being Hit By A Bus

Chaveer Jowata, 33 years old, also known as Avish, succumbed to his injuries on Friday evening, February 17, in the intensive care unit of the North Hospital. The resident of Rivière du Rempart was seriously injured on the morning of Saturday 12 February when his car, a white Toyota Premio, was violently hit by a bus on the Royal Road in Poudre d’Or Hamlet. His wife Fatchel Jowata and their 4 year old son were injured. The body of Chaveer Jowata was autopsied this Saturday morning, February 18, at the morgue of the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis.

It was around 10:36 am on Saturday, February 12 that this tragic accident occurred. A bus of the company Divla Bus Transport was driving on the Royal Road of Poudre d’Or Hamlet. At a certain point, the 55 year old driver, living in the village of Petit-Raffray, coming from L’Espérance Trébuchet and heading towards Poudre d’Or Hamlet, tried to pass a Honda Civic car. He hit the Civic before hitting the car of Chaveer Jowata who was coming in the opposite direction. The impact was so violent that the car was dragged for several meters.

The Toyota Premio was seriously damaged. Volunteers rushed to the scene of the accident to rescue the three occupants of the car. It took the intervention of the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service to pull out Chaveer Jowata from his vehicle.

He was rushed to the North Hospital where he was admitted to the neurological ward of the intensive care unit. His wife was admitted to the ward, while their son was discharged under the care of his paternal grandmother after receiving treatment.

The driver of the Honda Civic, a 53 year old entrepreneur and resident of Mon Gout, Pamplemousses who witnessed this accident gave a statement to the investigators of the Piton police station to explain in great detail the circumstances of this accident.

Chaveer Jowata breathed his last at around 10:30 pm on the evening of Friday, February 17. Dr. Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer who conducted the autopsy of his body at the Dr. Jeetoo Hospital morgue attributed his death to craniocerebral injuries. The driver of the bus involved in this accident was arrested on Saturday, February 18 and brought before the Bail and Remand Court in Port-Louis. He is facing a provisional charge of manslaughter.

The funeral of Chaveer Jowata took place at 2pm on Saturday, February 18. He was cremated at Haute Rive, Riviere du Rempart.
