Drinking Party Turns Into Drama

Must Read

An outing between three friends from Petit-Verger, St-Pierre for a drinking party on the bank of the Dalmajee River at Bois-Chéri Road, Moka turned into a tragedy for Avinash Jeetun Jadoo, also known as Jean, a 38-year-old mason. This man could not resist the idea of a swim and threw himself into the water. Unfortunately, he drowned in the late afternoon of Tuesday, November 16. The autopsy performed on his body in the early evening concluded that he died of asphyxiation due to drowning.

In a statement made at the Moka police station, Nitish Venkaman, 35, explained that he and his two friends Veersingh Doorgachurn and Avinash Jeetun Jadoo went to the bank of the Dalmajee River for a drinking party.  At some point, his two friends jumped into the water. Avinash Jadoo found himself in trouble in the water but Nitish says he managed to pull his friend out and placed a rock.

However, he swam back into the river and disappeared soon after. Nitish Venkamah says he waited for quite some time before alerting the police. A team of police officers arrived on the scene and elements of the Mauritian Police Intervention Group (GIPM) were called in. The lifeless body of Avinash Jadoo was recovered.

The body was then transported to the morgue of the Dr. A,G,Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis for the autopsy. The autopsy, performed by Dr. Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer, attributed his death to asphyxiation due to drowning.

Avinash Jadoo’s funeral is scheduled for this Wednesday, November 17 at 2pm. He will be buried at the Circumstance Cemetery, St. Pierre.

An investigation has been opened to shed light on the exact circumstances of this tragedy.
