COVID-19: The MLC Proposes A National Curfew

Must Read

Faced with the increase in the number of cases of Covid-19, the Mauritius Labour Congress (MLC) is asking the government to introduce a national curfew in the country between 7 pm and 5 am.

Meeting the press, MLC president Haniff Peerun said the government could change the time slot proposed by the union confederation if it wanted to. He stressed that the MLC would not go so far as to call for a third lockdown in the country because this could bring the economy to its knees and jeopardize many jobs at the same time. He recalled that workers, the self-employed and those working in the informal sector have suffered greatly financially during the lockdown period. He recalled that it is the workers who work in the morning to eat their fill in the evening who will be particularly affected by a possible lock down. He proposed a return to social distancing on buses, entry into supermarkets in alphabetical order, limiting the number of people in rallies, at the beach and in wedding ceremonies to 25 people, distribution of free masks to the public and providing medical insurance to front liners. Nurses Union spokesman Bholanath Jeewooth said that the situation in hospitals has become unmanageable at the moment. He pointed out that every day about ten hospital staff members are tested positive for COVID-19.
