Cake Shop Owner Arrested For Money Laundering

A sum of Rs 400,100, 340 euros (Rs 16,660) and 200 Kenyan shillings suspected to be the proceeds of money laundering were seized from the home of a cake seller in Cite Richelieu, Petite-Riviere. The suspect Didier Guillaume, 31 years old, was arrested and placed in custody. This arrest was made this Friday, October 8, by police officers of the Alpha 3 Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) of the Metropolitan Police.

Based on information that the suspect was involved in illicit trafficking, Inspector Jauforally’s men raided his home at around 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 8. As the suspect was not present, the search was conducted in the presence of his wife.

This exercise resulted in the seizure of a bag containing cannabis particles, the sum of Rs 400,100 M, 340 euros and 200 Kenyan shillings. The police also seized four gold chains, three wrist watches and four watches.  The ADSU suspects that the money and items seized were from the sale of drugs.

The suspect’s wife was taken to the ADSU office at Central Barracks for questioning. However, she was released after her husband turned himself in. Didier Guillaume was brought before the Bail and Remand Court (BRC) on Saturday, October 9 on a provisional charge of money laundering.  The court agreed to release him on bail. This Monday, October 11, he will be brought before the Bamboo Court to pay the amount set by the magistrate.

In addition, the Metropolitan Police ADSU Alpha 6 team, led by Inspector Lepois, made two arrests for drug trafficking. On Friday, October 8, at approximately 1:00 p.m., a raid was conducted at the home of Désiré Colain, a 46-year-old bricklayer. This led to the discovery of ten cannabis plants measuring between twenty and ninety centimeters and twenty-five grams of the same drug. The market value of this drug, is of Rs 65 000.

This Saturday, October 9, the same team put under lock and key Bruddy Augustin. This man, aged 30 and living in St-Malo, Baie du Tombeau, was found in possession of a parcel containing ten grams of heroin and another parcel containing three grams of synthetic drug.  The total amount is estimated at Rs 164 000.

The two suspects were presented before the BRC last Saturday, October 9.
