Admissions On The Rise In Mauritius : Reunion Island Mourns 38 Deaths From Covid

The number of positive cases on 25 January is down by half, but hospital admissions are up, with 31 more admissions than on Monday. On Reunion island, the rate of positivity has risen from 30% to 36% in one week, with a rise in contamination with the Omicron variant. However, in ICU, 80% of the cases are infected with the Delta variant.

40 new admissions on 25 January

While the positivity rate is down by exactly 50% in the last 24 hours as compared to 24 January from 148 cases to 74, the number of admissions has soared from 9 on 24 January to 40 on 25 January, including 5 serious cases which require observation at New ENT Hospital in Vacoas. In the regional hospitals, where 35 patients were admitted, 21 patients have also been recorded as cured and sent home. Vaccination is progressing with 969,779 people receiving the first dose, 929,049 the second and 317,293 the third/booster dose.

46, 914 new cases in one week in Reunion

On Reunion island, contamination is on the rise, according to a press release from the Agence Régionale de Santé (ARS). In the latest weekly count from Saturday 15 to Friday 21 January, the island recorded 38 deaths and 46,914 new cases, that is, 5,480 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on 21 January as compared to 3,668 the week before. The sister island has increased to an average of 152,000 PCR tests per week. Of the victims, 37 had co-morbidities and 33 were unvaccinated, but the 5 vaccinated victims were all co-morbid cases.  65 of the 111 ICU beds are occupied by Covid-19 positive patients. The contagiousness of the Omicron variant has taken over on the island, with the Delta variant accounting for only 7% of infections. The health measures have been intensified more than ever in the face of this new count, as has the campaign for the administration of the first, second and third doses.
