The former police commissioner was interviewed by the court of inquiry into the sinking of the Wakashio. After his deposition, he spoke to the press. He said that no system in the world is perfect. “There is no such thing as a perfect system. Just look at what happened in the Suez Canal, in the United States and more recently in Europe, with the overflows,” he said.
Khemraj Servansing stressed that the environment is changing dynamically. But now, with the experience we have gained, we need to review the system. We need to consolidate where we have done relatively well and review where we have fallen short,” he said. He also outlined some of the steps he has taken as police commissioner to improve the efficiency and response time of the police in dealing with disasters. “We need to be prepared for any eventuality,” he stressed.
