The Port police have launched an investigation to establish the identity of the person whose body, in an advanced state of decomposition, was found in the hold of a submerged fishing boat in the Caudan basin. The derelict boat had caught fire on June 18. It cannot be ruled out that the victim may have been a homeless man squatting on the boat.
The man’s body was taken to the morgue of the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital in Port-Louis. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis for an autopsy. The cause of death could not be determined due to the state of decomposition of the body. Samples were taken for DNA testing. The macabre discovery was made on the morning of Monday July 10.
On Sunday June 18, when firefighters went to the site to put out the fire on the boat, they found nothing when they inspected the area. Police were alerted after a body was found floating on board.
The police have checked with all the companies operating in the port area to see if any of their employees have been reported missing. So far, no information has been forthcoming.
