The High Commissioner-designate of the United Kingdom, Mrs Charlotte Anik Rachel Pierre, presented her Letter of Credence to the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun, today, at the State House, in Réduit.

In a statement, the High Commissioner-designate expressed gratitude for the gracious and warm welcome she received from the President with whom she had had the opportunity to discuss the big issues that the world, Mauritius and the UK are facing whilst emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic.  She reiterated the commitment of the UK to partner with Mauritius as both countries emerge from this pandemic and learn to live with it.

Discussions also focused on the global challenge of climate change, the Conference of the Parties (COP 26) scheduled in Glasgow this November, and shared values around democracy and governance.  Mrs Charlotte Pierre highlighted the importance to role model these values in a world that continues to be faced with the opposite which can be observed elsewhere in the globe with vast challenges particularly in Afghanistan.

Speaking about the COP 26 event, Mrs Charlotte Pierre emphasised that the UK is keen to continue to partner with Mauritius for its ambitious Nationally determined contributions which will be published later this month.  ‘This is really a big part of the bilateral relationship here’, she pointed out.

In addition, she indicated that other areas of shared cooperation were evoked during the meeting including the Mauritian diaspora which is vey active in the UK and the opportunity for them and other British tourists to return as Mauritius very cautiously and carefully reopens.

Mrs Charlotte Pierre, has served from 2019, as the Deputy Director, West Africa Department, Africa Directorate, at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.  In 2019, she also occupied the post of Acting Director, Middle East and North Africa, at the Department for International Development.
