The Rotary Club Of Phoenix Is Building A Science Room At The H. Chooromoney

Must Read

Making science more interesting for school children! With this in mind, the Rotary Club of Phoenix, in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Mauritius, has renovated a classroom at the H. Chooromoney Government School, located in Bassin, Quatre-Bornes, where children will be able to enjoy learning about science, from theory to practice. The inauguration took place on Thursday, September 30, 2021, in the presence of the Permanent Secretary of the Minister of Education, Mr. Maubarakahmad Boodhun.

“Education is the key to a better future. That is why the Rotary Club of Phoenix has been supporting H. Chooromoney Government School since 2018 with the aim of enabling students to aspire to better opportunities, but also because one of Rotary’s areas of focus is supporting education. Among other things, we have set up an integrated tutoring program, provided medical equipment for the school’s special education unit, and given backpacks to the children. Renovating the science room is part of this effort to give students the tools they need to succeed, while developing an inquisitive mind for science and the natural world,” says Rooma Narrainen, Immediate Past President (IPP) of the Rotary Club of Phoenix.

The project began a year ago at the request of the school, which wanted to renovate this science room for grades 4-6. The science classroom has a brand new decoration and new furniture. It has also been completely repainted, and includes posters, visual aids, equipment, science books, and demonstration objects to facilitate the children’s understanding and learning of science.

For the 2020/2021 Rotary year, the Rotary Club of Phoenix has been working on a comprehensive support program for the children at H. Chooromoney GS. In addition to the Science Class, the association has also implemented a school garden project called “Little Green Thumb” in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Food Security’s Food and Agricultural Research Extension Institute (FAREI). Recycled plastic bins containing soil and bio-compost were set up on the school premises for children to learn how to grow several types of vegetables, herbs and medicinal plants. The program also includes educating the children about sustainable gardening practices.

And, with support from the Rotary District Designated Fund, the Rotary Club of Phoenix is providing yogurt to all school children on a weekly basis for one year. With this project, which began in February 2021, the association aims to promote a balanced diet among children.
