It is tough for any court to hear cases where the person cannot understand English, French or Mauritian Créole. It is more difficult to find interpreters in other languages so that they can translate during enquiries and court hearings.
The Judiciary has recently advertised to enlist on an ‘ad hoc’ basis the services of an Interpreter to interpret:
(i) Zulu into English/French and English/French into Zulu,
(ii) Afrikaans into English/French and English/French into Afrikaans, in the proceedings before the Supreme Court of Mauritius, the Intermediate Court, the Industrial Court and the District Courts of Mauritius.
In the past, the same services have been advertised for Bengali, Malagasy and other languages so that the persons understanding only those languages will be able to have a fair hearing.
